In the first quarter of 2026, total domestic theater revenue reached 318 billion won with 31.9 million admissions, the highest first-quarter figures since the pandemic year of 2020.
Most of this recovery was driven by a single film, 'The Man Who Lives With the King,' with Showbox-distributed titles accounting for 57.1% of total first-quarter admissions.
Looking at the first half as a whole, the top-grossing 'The Man Who Lives With the King' accounted for 45% of the 37.37 million admissions for Korean films, with a gap of more than 11 million admissions over the second-place film, indicating that the market recovery was concentrated in a single title rather than spread evenly.
Among distributors, Showbox topped the ranking with first-half revenue of 281.4 billion won and a 48.6% market share, of which a single film, 'The Man Who Lives With the King,' accounted for 58%.
Structurally, however, admissions decline and reduced investment across the industry persist, and major investor-distributors continue to trim the number of titles in their lineups and grow more cautious about tentpole investments.
Notably, in June 2026 Megabox Joongang, the parent of competing distributor Plus M Entertainment, filed for court receivership alongside other JoongAng Group affiliates, spreading uncertainty across theater infrastructure, including settlement disputes with commissioned theaters.
While this is not a direct financial issue for Showbox, it is cited as a risk to the stability of the broader theatrical distribution ecosystem.
Although Showbox has relatively strengthened its presence as competitors' investment and distribution activity has weakened, the broader structural shift toward fewer distributors capable of reliably backing mid-to-large Korean films is also worth monitoring.
