SM Life Design traces back to KD Media, spun off from Seoul Shinmun's lottery-ticket printing business in 1998, which was renamed FNC Add Culture in 2016 and again to its current name after being absorbed into SM Entertainment in 2018.
The company sits under SM Studios, an intermediate holding entity that SM Entertainment launched in 2021 to consolidate non-music affiliates such as SM C&C, KeyEast, Dear U and Mystic Story. Its core operations fall into three areas.
First is printing, producing albums, photobooks, posters, photocards and season's greetings, primarily tied to SM-affiliated artists.
Second is logistics, where the Paju headquarters' large warehouse and WMS-based system handle consignment distribution of albums and merchandise, managing roughly 10,000 SKUs and sizable inventory in real time, with capacity to expand into third-party logistics.
Third is space rental through the Paju SM Studio, completed in late 2024, catering to music-video, advertising and drama shoot demand.
More recently, the company has broadened beyond its SM-concentrated customer base by expanding cooperation with Kakao Entertainment-affiliated labels such as Starship Entertainment, handling album volumes for artists including IVE and Monsta X.
The K-pop physical-album and merchandise value chain is dominated by a handful of players, and the company's strength lies in its internalized chain spanning printing, logistics and storage.
