English version
Padu swung to a profit in Q1 2026 on surging AI data center SSD controller demand, yet accumulated losses that eroded equity and an ongoing legal case remain in play.
Padu is a fabless chip company that designs PCIe NVMe enterprise SSD (eSSD) controllers for data centers. The controller is the core system chip governing an SSD's read/write operations and power efficiency; it acts as the brain of the SSD, controlling data read/write and optimizing power efficiency. The business splits into standalone controller supply and finished SSDs sold via NAND makers and module houses, and in Q1 this year the controller business accounted for 80% of total revenue. The share of higher-margin controller revenue versus finished SSDs rose from about 55% in 2024 to roughly 70% in 2025. On the customer side, the company is known to supply its enterprise SSD controllers to Meta, the world's largest server maker Dell, SK hynix and Western Digital. Padu supplies SSD controllers to SanDisk, which combines them with its own NAND to ship finished products to big tech firms. In Asia, it began a strategic collaboration with Taiwan's memory and SSD brand ADATA in April last year and accelerated its push through the TRUSTA brand launch and a three-way tie-up with Giga Computing. On competition, only three Korean firms can independently design SSD controllers - Samsung, SK hynix and Padu - and Padu is regarded as the only Korean company able to serve multiple NAND makers and hyperscalers as a dedicated fabless player. As new growth drivers, Padu is building out new businesses such as power management ICs (PMIC) alongside its controller core while broadening its formerly US-centric customer base into Asia.
On confirmed figures, annual revenue rose sharply from KRW 22.47bn in 2023 to KRW 43.50bn in 2024 and KRW 92.42bn in 2025. Operating results, however, stayed deeply in the red for three straight years at KRW -58.57bn (2023), KRW -95.05bn (2024) and KRW -65.47bn (2025). The narrower 2025 operating loss reflected higher revenue plus a one-off item: in Q4 2025 the company booked KRW 11bn of final development costs for its next-generation Gen6 controller, which made Q4 the worst quarter with an operating loss of KRW -29.49bn and an owners' net loss of KRW -38.34bn. Quarterly revenue held steady from KRW 19.22bn in Q1 2025 through KRW 23.68bn, KRW 25.64bn and KRW 23.88bn, then jumped about 2.5x to KRW 59.54bn in Q1 2026. That quarter delivered operating profit of KRW 7.69bn and owners' net income of KRW 10.41bn, a swing into the black; this was a 210% surge from KRW 19.2bn a year earlier, with operating profit and net income each flipping from loss to profit, driven mainly by booming eSSD demand from AI data centers. Accumulated losses eroded equity, with owners' equity plunging from KRW 184.88bn in 2023 to KRW 19.31bn in 2025, while the debt ratio jumped from 37.2% in 2024 to 518.5% in 2025. Operating cash flow improved markedly, from KRW -42.16bn in 2023 and KRW -108.84bn in 2024 to KRW -3.70bn in 2025. Annual loss per share also narrowed, from KRW -1,846 in 2024 to KRW -1,532 in 2025.
The downstream enterprise SSD (eSSD) market has entered a structural growth phase driven by AI data center investment. As AI adoption accelerates global data center spending, enterprise SSD demand is rising structurally and the strategic value of the controller, the SSD's core component, is rising with it. Because one controller is fitted per SSD, unit-shipment growth flows directly into revenue, and KV-cache storage demand from spreading AI inference workloads is seen pushing global eSSD shipments to 71 million units in 2026 (+19% YoY) on a structural growth path. The memory industry echoes this, as SK hynix said on a recent earnings call that NAND is shifting from simple storage to a storage solution supporting AI compute flows, and that demand for high-performance, high-capacity eSSDs will expand structurally. On market size, after Nvidia presented at CES 2026 an architecture that stores inference KV-cache on separate SSDs, the global SSD controller market is projected to expand to USD 4.9bn by 2030. Competitively, Padu goes head to head with specialist controller makers such as Marvell, and some research argues that Padu holds momentum to take share from Marvell in the high-performance, low-power AI data center segment, and that the time it gains while Marvell delays its Gen6 launch could shape future orders. These are analyst views, however, and actual share trends will depend on how mass production and certification progress.

Management frames 2026 as a year of an earnings leap, and order metrics support that. As hyperscaler customers' SSD controller orders increased, this year's new orders topped KRW 300bn as of early June. Padu expects steeper growth into the second half as controller mass production for hyperscalers ramps up. On next-generation products, Padu unveiled its next-generation sixth-gen (Gen6) SSD controller for the first time at Computex 2026. Its Gen6 architecture is characterized by more than doubling both compute speed and power efficiency versus the mainstream Gen5 standard. On customer momentum, Goldman Sachs projected that SanDisk's eSSD supply for Google data centers would ramp from the first half of 2026 and analyzed that the volume could potentially exceed Meta's. On costs, NH Investment & Securities noted that new Gen6 projects and rising R&D could keep cost burdens elevated near term, but that those burdens should gradually ease from 2026 as initial development costs are absorbed. These company and brokerage outlooks rest on assumptions, however, and the actual timing of Gen6 mass production and the success of customer diversification are the key swing factors for future results.
On the confirmed headline metrics, return on equity stands at -90.1%, earnings per share at KRW -1,081, and book value per share at KRW 670; because the trailing twelve-month result is still in loss territory, an earnings-based multiple is of limited use. That said, the quarterly trajectory is moving from loss toward profit, so readings of the earnings metrics can shift quickly depending on the reference point. Relative to net assets, the stock trades at a sizable premium above BPS, reflecting both equity shrinkage from accumulated losses and growth expectations already priced in. With no per-share dividend in the period, there is no dividend-yield appeal to highlight. Some brokerages and research note that loss-making status and shrinking equity limit PER/PBR comparisons and instead use revenue-based multiples, but conclusions vary widely with peer selection and growth assumptions, so definitive interpretations warrant caution.
AI data center investment is structurally lifting enterprise SSD demand. Cumulative orders through April this year hit KRW 166.3bn, overtaking last year's full-year revenue of KRW 92.4bn. Subsequently, new orders surpassed KRW 300bn by early June, sharply improving revenue visibility.
The higher-margin controller share is expanding fast. The controller revenue mix rose from about 55% in 2024 to roughly 70% in 2025, driving margin improvement. The company said that, with development investment winding down, revenue can grow without higher SG&A, making margin improvement clearer.
Next-generation products and a broader customer base are advancing in parallel. Padu unveiled its Gen6 SSD controller for the first time at Computex 2026 and laid out a strategy to accelerate into Taiwan and Asia after North American hyperscalers. In Taiwan alone this year it secured KRW 60.4bn of finished enterprise SSD supply contracts.
Accumulated losses have pressured the balance sheet. On confirmed figures, owners' equity plunged from KRW 184.88bn in 2023 to KRW 19.31bn in 2025, while the debt ratio jumped from 37.2% in 2024 to 518.5% in 2025. If the swing to profit does not persist, concerns over capital headroom could resurface.
A trial tied to the IPO process is underway. The Seoul Southern District Court held the first hearing on February 26 for the co-CEOs and others indicted for capital-markets-law violations, on allegations that the 2023 IPO was pursued without disclosing that a key client had halted orders. Depending on the outcome, reputational and management risks could grow.
Earnings depend heavily on a few large customers and a single controller product line. Some research models a 2024-style shock in which a sharp drop in a specific NAND customer's orders swings quarterly revenue significantly. Until customer diversification and new businesses such as PMIC take hold, earnings volatility from order swings persists.
Padu swung to a quarterly profit in Q1 2026 with revenue of KRW 59.5bn and operating profit of about KRW 7.7bn, riding expanding demand for AI data center SSD controllers. Revenue grew sharply from KRW 22.47bn in 2023 to KRW 92.42bn in 2025, while a rising high-margin controller mix and cumulative orders topping KRW 300bn by early June are improving visibility on both scale and profitability. However, three straight years of heavy losses sharply shrank owners' equity and pushed the debt ratio to 518.5%, and IPO-related legal risk and potential CB dilution must be weighed in balance. On a trailing twelve-month basis, ROE and EPS remain in loss territory, and the stock trades at a large premium to net assets. The timing of Gen6 mass production, customer diversification and the durability of quarterly profit are the key swing factors ahead.
