English version
A swift decline from peak profitability in 2023 to operating loss in 2025—driven by construction market weakness and deck plate price compression—has continued into Q1 2026, yet a major rights offering has substantially fortified the balance sheet, with the critical question now being whether sound insulation and long-span deck businesses can generate visible revenue to restore earnings.
SY Steel Tech was established in 2015 and listed on KOSDAQ in November 2023 as a specialized building materials company. Its core business is the manufacture, sale, and installation of deck plates—a metal composite structural product for building floor slabs that replaces traditional plywood formwork by factory-producing integrated rebar and formwork assemblies for on-site delivery. The deck plate method offers advantages in construction speed, labor reduction, and quality standardization versus traditional techniques, positioning it to benefit structurally from the expanded 52-hour work week and tightening on-site safety regulations. Deck plate penetration is estimated at approximately 28% of the total building floor construction market (approximately ₩800bn annually), with major customers including Korea's top-tier construction companies and LH (Korea Land and Housing Corporation), primarily targeting apartments, mixed-use complexes, and logistics facilities. In April 2024, the company entered the inter-floor sound insulation market by acquiring a 20% stake in Sonics System, a specialist in noise reduction materials, becoming the only listed company holding LH-certified sound insulation products across all three noise-reduction grades. Sound insulation is being supplied to major contractors including Dongbu Construction, GS Engineering, and Lotte Construction, as well as more than 120 LH project sites nationwide; an IoT-integrated total noise solution is under joint development with startup MetaInotech. Approximately ₩37bn of the September 2025 rights offering proceeds have been allocated as facility investment for new deck plate and long-span deck production equipment and expanded sound insulation capacity at the Chungju 2nd plant. Parent company SY Co. (approximately 32% stake) has an existing solar EPC track record and is expected to provide technical and operational synergies for SY Steel Tech's foray into renewable energy.
In 2023, the company delivered peak performance with revenue of ₩119.8bn, operating income of ₩14.6bn (OPM: 12.2%), and operating cash flow of +₩11.8bn. In 2024, revenue declined only modestly to ₩117.0bn (-2.3%), but operating income collapsed 44.5% to ₩8.1bn (OPM: 6.9%) and operating cash flow turned effectively zero at -₩220mn, signaling a clear deterioration in underlying profitability. In 2025, revenue fell a sharp 16.7% to ₩97.4bn with a swing to an operating loss of ₩2.7bn (OPM: -2.7%) and operating cash flow deteriorated sharply to -₩9.9bn. Quarterly trends show the company maintained a narrow profit in H1 2025 (Q1: ₩26.5bn revenue, ₩280mn OP; Q2: ₩25.0bn, ₩240mn OP) before sliding to a loss in the seasonally softer Q3 (₩18.9bn, -₩220mn OP). Q4 2025 was the most severe, posting an operating loss of ₩2.97bn on ₩26.9bn in revenue (OPM: -11.0%), with the concentration of the full-year net loss in a single quarter suggesting potential year-end cost recognition or one-time adjustments. Full-year 2025 net loss attributable to controlling shareholders was ₩2.1bn (EPS: -₩54). Q1 2026 deepened concerns, with revenue plunging another 34.2% YoY to ₩17.5bn, an operating loss of ₩590mn, and a net loss attributable to controlling shareholders of ₩720mn. Management cited intensifying competition, deck plate price declines, and rising construction labor costs as primary headwinds. On the balance sheet, the rights offering doubled equity from ₩50.1bn to ₩95.9bn and cut the debt ratio from 59.7% to 26.6%, but with operating cash flow consistently negative, a recovery in earnings power is the prerequisite for this improved financial structure to deliver real value.
Domestic construction investment is projected to see only a limited ~2% recovery in 2026, following approximately a 9% decline in 2025 (Korea Institute of Construction Industry Research; Korea Research Institute for Construction Policy). The public sector is expected to lead a modest recovery, supported by an expanded SOC budget of ₩27.5tn in 2026 (+7.9% YoY) and LH's public housing supply expansion plans, while the private residential sector remains hindered by elevated construction costs, PF loan tightness, and accumulated unsold inventory. The deck plate market is closely tied to private building starts; sustained weakness in private construction translates directly into tepid demand, and intensifying price competition amid soft market conditions continues to apply broad margin pressure across the industry. In contrast, the sound insulation market is experiencing structural demand growth triggered by the mandatory post-construction inter-floor noise certification applied to all housing project approvals after August 2022, and SY Steel Tech—as the only listed company with full LH Grade 1-3 coverage—is well-positioned as a direct regulatory tailwind beneficiary. Construction order leading indicators bottomed in 2023 and have shown signs of recovery since 2024; accounting for the typical two-year lag, a construction materials demand recovery in H2 2026 and beyond is plausible. Deck plate maintains a long-term penetration growth trend versus traditional methods given safety and labor-efficiency advantages, but near-term headwinds from declining starts and low-bid competition remain material. Steel sheet and wire rod price stabilization will be a near-term swing factor for cost structure improvement.

The company plans to complete installation of long-span deck production equipment at the Chungju 2nd plant by 2026, expanding annual deck plate capacity from 3.6mn to 4.7mn ㎡, with sound insulation production capacity also expanding from 1.5mn to 2.5mn ㎡ annually. The original approximately ₩20bn sound insulation revenue target for 2025 set at the time of the rights offering appears to have been significantly missed, but sell-side analysts expect sound insulation profitability contribution to ramp meaningfully from H1 2026. Because sound insulation is installed after the structural frame is complete, the typical lag from contract signing to actual supply exceeds one year; performance credentials from the GS Engineering Pyeongtaek Godeok Xi Centro project—the first large-scale private development to apply the government's post-construction noise certification scheme—are expected to serve as a foundation for future contract wins. For the core deck plate business, the company is strategically focusing on higher-margin public-sector bids over private-sector competition to defend profitability. The solar energy business is being structured as a rooftop solar EPC venture leveraging parent SY's track record, though a concrete revenue contribution timeline has not yet been confirmed. The Korea Institute of Construction Industry Research projects 2026 construction orders to grow 4.0% YoY, opening the potential for deck plate demand recovery in H2 2026, but this must be paired with price recovery and cost improvement to flow through to profits. Given that Q1 2026 revenue was approximately 34% below the prior-year quarter, the magnitude of H2 recovery will be the decisive factor for any full-year earnings normalization.
With the company currently in a net loss position (EPS: -₩81), earnings-based multiples are not applicable; the stock is trading at a modest premium to book value based on KRX-reported BPS of ₩1,912 per share. The substantial increase in equity and the debt ratio now well below industry averages following the rights offering likely underpin part of the above-book premium. The company demonstrated meaningful earnings power during the 2023–2024 normalised periods, with double-digit operating margins, and some recovery expectation may be embedded in the current valuation structure. Despite reporting a net loss in 2025, a cash dividend of ₩50 per share was maintained, with earnings recovery being the critical variable for its sustainability. Given the significant increase in shares outstanding from the rights offering, even as earnings recover, per-share earnings restoration is likely to be more gradual than in prior profitable cycles—a factor worth incorporating into any forward assessment.
The mandatory post-construction inter-floor noise certification requirement for all housing project approvals since August 2022 is structurally expanding demand for high-performance sound insulation. SY Steel Tech is the only listed company holding full LH Grade 1–3 noise insulation product certifications, actively building references by supplying major contractors including GS Engineering, Lotte Construction, and Dongbu Construction alongside over 120 LH project sites nationwide. Sell-side analysis indicates that sound insulation carries higher margins than the core deck plate business; once capacity reaches 2.5mn ㎡ annually post-expansion, this segment has the potential to transform the overall profitability profile.
The near-fully-subscribed September 2025 rights offering (~₩50bn in proceeds) doubled equity to approximately ₩95.9bn and reduced the debt ratio to 26.6%, substantially reducing near-term financial distress risk. Completion of the Chungju 2nd plant's long-span deck equipment will expand annual production capacity from 3.6mn to 4.7mn ㎡, creating an immediate revenue scaling platform once the construction market recovers. Pre-emptive capacity investment ahead of an industry recovery could deliver a competitive economies-of-scale advantage relative to less-prepared peers.
The deck plate method reduces labor requirements and shortens construction timelines versus traditional formwork, making it a structural beneficiary of the expanded 52-hour work week and tightening on-site safety regulations—tailwinds expected to drive long-term penetration growth. A production yield advantage of approximately 5–8 percentage points versus competitors from European high-speed equipment, combined with the integrated-insulation EazyDeck product, supports price and quality competitiveness. Construction order leading indicators have been recovering since bottoming in 2023; accounting for the typical two-year lag, a demand recovery catalyst from H2 2026 onwards is plausible.
Private residential construction is unlikely to see a meaningful recovery in 2026, sustaining weakness in deck plate demand and continued selling price pressure. The 34.2% YoY revenue decline in Q1 2026 signals a deepening contraction in the core business, with operating losses persisting. The simultaneous pressures of declining selling prices and rising construction labor costs make the timing of profitability recovery highly uncertain, with low-bid competition keeping project-level margins depressed.
The approximately ₩20bn sound insulation revenue target for 2025 set at the rights offering appears to have been significantly missed, and initial facility investment and commissioning costs are weighing on near-term profitability. The severe deterioration in operating cash flow to -₩9.9bn in 2025 reflects not only margin losses but also the compounding effects of elevated working capital and delayed deployment of offering proceeds. Should actual revenue contributions from sound insulation, long-span deck, and solar energy fall short of expectations in both timing and scale, further earnings deterioration risk remains a material concern.
The September 2025 rights offering significantly expanded total shares outstanding to approximately 50.17mn, with new shares issued at a discount to the prevailing market price, structurally diluting per-share book value for existing shareholders. Even as earnings recover, the enlarged share count means that the recovery of absolute EPS to pre-dilution levels will take considerably longer than in prior cycles. Uncertainty around both the timing of earnings normalization and the pace of per-share earnings recovery represents a structural constraint on share price re-rating.
SY Steel Tech deteriorated rapidly from peak performance in 2023 (12.2% OPM; operating cash flow +₩11.8bn) to an operating loss in 2025, with Q1 2026 revenue still more than 34% below the prior year—leaving the timing of recovery opaque. That said, the September 2025 rights offering roughly doubled equity and reduced the debt ratio to 26.6%, substantially diminishing near-term financial vulnerability. The sound insulation business benefits from structural demand growth driven by tightening noise regulations, and the company's unique position as the only listed entity with full LH Grade 1–3 coverage could serve as a key medium-to-long-term profitability catalyst. However, a meaningful earnings rebound requires both new business revenue traction and a recovery in core deck plate margins to materialize concurrently—conditions that industry research institutions broadly view as requiring more time than a typical cycle turn. The expanded share count from the rights offering also means that even as earnings recover, per-share earnings restoration is likely to be more gradual than in prior cycles. A disciplined monitoring approach—watching sequentially for sound insulation revenue materialization, quarterly operating loss narrowing, and improvement in domestic construction start leading indicators—is the most useful framework for tracking the recovery thesis.
