Techwing (089030) — HBM Test Tool Ramp Meets Cash Flow Strain

Summary

Cube Prober adoption has widened across the three big memory makers and quarterly revenue and operating profit recovered sharply in the first half of 2026, but net income and operating cash flow have not yet caught up.

Key points

Business

Founded in 2002, Techwing makes back-end semiconductor test equipment; its core products are probe stations, Cube Prober, and memory and system-on-chip test handlers, while key customers include SK hynix, Micron, Kioxia, Intel and Infineon. Memory test handlers transport and sort chips and create the thermal environment during testing, and the company was first in the world to commercialize a handler testing 768 chips simultaneously, with its memory-segment share cited at around 70%. It does not sell test handlers to Samsung Electronics, whose handlers are supplied by affiliate Semes. Cube Prober, the new growth axis, dices wafers into individual dies and rearranges them in cube form so each die can be tested individually, cutting cost and time versus the older, more complex flow. As HBM stacks move from 8 and 12 layers toward 16, yield becomes harder to secure, structurally raising the importance of test steps. On customer traction, the company won its first Cube Prober mass-production order from Samsung Electronics in January 2025, followed by a second order that March, and Samsung has since been using Cube Prober in HBM4 mass production, SK hynix completed its quality evaluation, and demo units were reported to have gone to Micron. Disclosed contracts followed: a KRW 22.9bn test equipment supply deal with Micron Memory Malaysia in April 2026, with deliveries starting 20 June 2026 and final delivery slated for 1 August, and a KRW 9.7bn HBM test equipment contract with Samsung Electronics in May 2026 covering 18 May to 13 August 2026. Management stated that handler demand is also rising on domestic and overseas capacity additions, so legacy and new businesses are growing together, and that a non-memory probe station has passed a domestic customer's quality evaluation while the memory version is nearing completion. The portfolio is thus a two-track structure of handlers plus Cube Prober and probe stations; segment revenue splits are not formally disclosed, limiting quantitative comparison.

Earnings

The annual pattern is highly cyclical. Revenue fell from KRW 267.5bn with operating profit of KRW 57.7bn (21.6% margin) in 2022 to KRW 133.6bn and KRW 3.2bn (2.4%) in 2023, rebounded to KRW 185.5bn and KRW 23.4bn (12.6%) in 2024, then eased again to KRW 159.1bn and KRW 15.8bn (10.0%) in 2025. Bottom line swung from net losses attributable to owners of KRW 9.3bn in 2023 and KRW 20.9bn in 2024 to a profit of KRW 9.4bn in 2025. Quarterly, revenue and operating profit were KRW 48.9bn and KRW 6.4bn in the second quarter of 2025, KRW 41.8bn and KRW 7.1bn in the third, and KRW 33.9bn and KRW 0.6bn in the fourth, when the operating margin compressed to about 1.7%. Momentum then improved for two straight quarters: KRW 52.4bn revenue and KRW 9.7bn operating profit (18.5%) in the first quarter of 2026, and KRW 56.8bn and KRW 12.5bn (22.0%) in the second. First-half 2026 revenue and operating profit reached KRW 109.2bn and KRW 22.2bn, roughly 69% of full-year 2025 revenue achieved in six months. The bottom line was less even: second-quarter 2025 net profit attributable to owners of KRW 21.5bn far exceeded that quarter's operating profit, implying sizable non-operating effects, after which net losses of KRW 6.2bn, KRW 4.6bn and KRW 6.2bn followed in the third and fourth quarters of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, before a KRW 5.2bn profit in the second quarter of 2026. On the balance sheet, 2025 liabilities of KRW 421.6bn against equity of KRW 212.1bn pushed the debt-to-equity ratio to 198.7%, extending a rise from 98.8% in 2022, 125.4% in 2023 and 168.8% in 2024, while operating cash flow flipped from positive KRW 32.7bn in 2024 to negative KRW 16.1bn in 2025. Even allowing for the working-capital build typical of equipment makers during a delivery ramp, the key feature of this earnings phase is that profit recovery and cash flow recovery have not yet arrived together.

Industry

Demand is anchored in memory for artificial intelligence servers. JP Morgan was reported to expect the memory market to grow from USD 38bn to USD 58bn in 2026. HBM generation transitions, however, have proved less predictable than the company hoped. In the first half of 2025, technical issues and a pause in makers' investment delayed qualifications, so the Cube Prober volume targets the company had communicated were not met. Fourth-quarter 2025 orders fell short amid delayed HBM4 investment, with makers reportedly pushing schedules back as they prioritized speed upgrades demanded by end users. By mid-January 2026, industry observers said purchase orders for Cube Prober already exceeded the prior-year first-half level, though some planned volumes had slipped alongside strong DRAM pricing and HBM4 schedule changes. A recovery in legacy memory investment across NAND, DDR4 and DDR5 adds a second driver, so results track the broader memory capacity cycle rather than HBM alone. Competitively, the company combines a high handler share with first-mover status in the new Cube Prober category. Management argued that base-die inspection becomes a core step after HBM4 and that its own solution is effectively the only one capable of doing this at production scale. The flip side is that earnings hinge directly on the capex timing and qualification schedules of a handful of large customers.

Outlook

The company's stated direction is greater Cube Prober volume plus capacity expansion. In a June 2026 interview with the Korea Economic Daily, CEO Jang Nam said he expects to ship more than 200 Cube Prober units next year alone. The company said it is building a new 109,000 square meter facility in an industrial complex in northern Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, for Cube Prober and probe station production, to be brought online in stages from the second half of next year. Management also said Cube Prober could be used in other manufacturing steps and that demand should rise further beyond HBM4. On product extension, the confirmed facts are that the non-memory probe station passed a domestic customer's quality evaluation and the memory version is in final development. Market estimates diverge. In June 2026 the Korea Economic Daily cited Epic AI consensus figures of KRW 371.8bn revenue for 2026 and KRW 559.7bn for 2027. Shinhan Securities, in a March 2026 report, projected a second-half-weighted year with 2026 revenue of KRW 435.2bn and operating profit of KRW 95.6bn. Such estimates assume specific unit volumes and customer qualification timing, so verification comes only through quarterly results and single supply contract disclosures. Conversely, new plant spending and a delivery ramp can lift working capital and borrowing needs together, making cash flow metrics a checkpoint alongside growth.

Valuation

An earnings-based multiple cannot currently be computed. Summing the last four quarters leaves net income attributable to owners in negative territory, so any ratio using net profit as the denominator does not exist for this window. Against net assets, however, the shares trade at a substantial premium, indicating that the revenue and operating profit recovery seen in the first two quarters of 2026 and the Cube Prober expansion scenario are already priced in to a meaningful degree. A dividend is paid, but the yield relative to the share price is on the low side, consistent with a phase where capital is allocated to growth investment ahead of shareholder returns. For reference, Shinhan Securities in a March 2026 report assessed the then-prevailing twelve-month forward price-to-earnings ratio as in line with the average for domestic back-end equipment names. In short, the current multiple reflects expectations about future unit deliveries and margin durability rather than confirmed past profits, so whether quarterly results and contract disclosures fill in the actual numbers is the axis of the valuation debate.

Bull case

Contact points with all three big memory makers

Samsung Electronics uses Cube Prober in HBM4 mass production, SK hynix has completed its quality evaluation, and demo units were reported to have been supplied to Micron. Disclosures confirm a KRW 22.9bn contract with Micron Memory Malaysia in April 2026 and a KRW 9.7bn contract with Samsung Electronics in May. This can be read as a structure in which revenue is no longer tied to a single customer's capex calendar. Order size and timing at each account, however, still need to be verified through disclosures.

Two consecutive quarters of margin improvement

The fourth quarter of 2025, with KRW 33.9bn revenue and KRW 0.6bn operating profit for a margin near 1.7%, reversed into KRW 52.4bn revenue and KRW 9.7bn operating profit in the first quarter of 2026 and KRW 56.8bn and KRW 12.5bn in the second. The second-quarter 2026 operating margin of about 22.0% is comparable to the 21.6% recorded for full-year 2022. Equipment makers carry high fixed costs, so volume gains leave room for margin improvement. First-half operating profit of KRW 22.2bn already exceeds the KRW 15.8bn earned in all of 2025.

Capacity and product line expansion

The company said it is building a 109,000 square meter facility in northern Cheonan, to be started up in stages from the second half of next year. It also said the non-memory probe station passed a domestic customer's quality evaluation and the memory version is in final development. Management said Cube Prober could extend into other process steps and that demand should increase after HBM4. A broader product line can reduce dependence on any single equipment cycle.

Bear case

Lag in net income and cash flow

Operating profit is recovering, yet net losses attributable to owners of KRW 6.2bn, KRW 4.6bn and KRW 6.2bn ran consecutively in the third and fourth quarters of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, before a KRW 5.2bn profit in the second quarter of 2026. Operating cash flow in 2025 was negative KRW 16.1bn, reversing from positive KRW 32.7bn in 2024. Even accounting for working capital build during a sales upturn, the timing of improvement in earnings and in cash differs. When that gap narrows can only be confirmed through quarterly and semi-annual filings.

Rising leverage

The debt-to-equity ratio rose for four straight years: 98.8% in 2022, 125.4% in 2023, 168.8% in 2024 and 198.7% in 2025. At end-2025, liabilities stood at KRW 421.6bn against equity of KRW 212.1bn. When new plant investment and a delivery ramp overlap, borrowing and working capital needs can rise together. Depending on rate and currency conditions, non-operating items may also become more volatile.

History of qualification and order delays

In the first half of 2025, technical issues and a pause in makers' investment delayed qualifications, so the Cube Prober volume targets the company had communicated were missed. Industry sources also said fourth-quarter 2025 orders fell short because of delayed HBM4 investment. Fourth-quarter 2025 revenue was indeed KRW 33.9bn with operating profit of KRW 0.6bn, the weakest quarterly margin in the period. If customer schedules slip again, revenue recognition can swing on a quarterly basis.

What to watch

Bottom line

Techwing layers a new category, the Cube Prober HBM test tool, on top of its established memory test handler business. Reported adoption in Samsung Electronics HBM4 mass production, completion of SK hynix quality evaluation and demo unit supply to Micron have widened its customer footprint, while disclosures confirm a KRW 22.9bn contract with Micron Memory Malaysia in April 2026 and a KRW 9.7bn deal with Samsung Electronics in May. Results improved for two consecutive quarters after the fourth-quarter 2025 trough of KRW 33.9bn revenue and KRW 0.6bn operating profit, reaching KRW 52.4bn and KRW 9.7bn in the first quarter of 2026 and KRW 56.8bn and KRW 12.5bn in the second, with first-half operating profit of KRW 22.2bn exceeding the KRW 15.8bn earned in all of 2025. By contrast, 2025 operating cash flow was negative KRW 16.1bn and the debt-to-equity ratio reached 198.7%, so financial strain increased, and net income attributable to owners stayed in loss from the third quarter of 2025 through the first quarter of 2026. On the industry side, artificial intelligence memory investment and a legacy memory recovery overlap, but the record of qualification delays that caused earlier supply targets to be missed also belongs in the picture. The issues to watch are therefore whether margins hold, how cash flow and leverage behave while new capacity is built, and whether contract disclosures translate management expectations into actual figures.
