베스트로부터 A+(Superior), S&P로부터 A+(Stable) 등급을 받았다.

English version
Insurance profit has cooled and earnings are pausing, but the U.S. Fortegra acquisition and expanding dividends and buybacks have emerged as fresh variables.
Founded in 1962 as Korea's first public auto insurer, DB Insurance is now a comprehensive non-life insurer spanning long-term, auto, and general lines, and one of the top five non-life players. Long-term insurance is the portfolio core: it accounts for about 53.9% of total insurance revenue, far above auto (about 26.8%) and general lines (about 12%) (per the Q3 2025 report). Under IFRS17, long-term insurance generates the most contractual service margin (CSM), making it central to the profit structure. As is typical for non-life insurers, investment income from a large asset base supports earnings alongside insurance profit. Through subsidiaries it also offers life insurance, securities, and asset management. On ratings, it holds A+ (Superior) from A.M. Best and A+ (Stable) from S&P. Overseas, it has established a foothold in Southeast Asia via Vietnamese affiliate DBV Insurance, and is expanding globally through the Fortegra acquisition. Samsung Fire leads the field, with DB competing fiercely near the top against Meritz Fire, Hyundai Marine, and KB Insurance.
In FY2025, consolidated insurance revenue rose to KRW 16.43 trillion from KRW 15.70 trillion a year earlier, but operating profit slipped to KRW 2.38 trillion from KRW 2.42 trillion in 2024, and owners' net profit fell to KRW 1.788 trillion from KRW 1.852 trillion. Given owners' net profit of KRW 1.739 trillion in 2023, the top line grew while earnings paused. Behind the slowdown were large general-insurance claims and a weak long-term and auto environment. By quarter, owners' net profit was KRW 430.8 billion in Q1 2025 and KRW 650.4 billion in Q2, strong in the first half, then eased to KRW 328.2 billion in Q3 and KRW 378.6 billion in Q4. Notably, Q1 2026 owners' net profit of KRW 238.4 billion fell sharply from KRW 430.8 billion a year earlier, as rising risk loss ratios plus IBNR reserving sharply worsened the gap between expected and actual claims. A higher risk loss ratio, rising auto loss ratios, and one-off items such as fire claims pressured insurance profit, while investment income partly offset the weakness via higher interest and dividend income. Operating cash flow turned negative at KRW -282.4 billion in 2025 from KRW 3.34 trillion a year earlier, warranting monitoring. Consolidated equity was KRW 10.94 trillion at end-2025, keeping the firm near the top of the industry by capital size.
Since IFRS17's 2023 adoption, Korea's non-life industry has reorganized around long-term protection products, and large insurers have posted record results. Insurers focused on selling long-term protection products to secure CSM. Growth has since cooled, however, as regulators required stricter lapse-rate assumptions for low/no-surrender-value products, affecting CSM. At the same time, capital-regulation pressure is rising; the K-ICS solvency ratio fell below 200% after transitional measures in Q1, to 197.9%, for the first time in about 23 years. Competitively, DB Insurance ranks near the top in capital and earnings power, with 2025 pre-tax profit of KRW 2.108 trillion, third behind Samsung Fire and Meritz Fire, and equity of KRW 9.855 trillion, second only to Samsung Fire. Its CSM balance of KRW 12.205 trillion is also second behind Samsung Fire. Auto insurance faces difficult profitability amid worse loss ratios and rate-cut pressure, while long-term loss ratios and the expected-versus-actual claims gap have become industry-wide challenges.

The key variable is the U.S. specialty insurer Fortegra acquisition. DB signed a deal in September 2025 to acquire 100% of Fortegra's shares for USD 1.65 billion, and obtained domestic regulatory approval to own it as a subsidiary on April 1, 2026. Closing still requires acceptance of overseas direct-investment filings and change-of-control approvals from U.S. and other regulators, and closing is expected within the first half of 2026. Fortegra has long maintained a stable combined ratio of around 90% in the U.S. and Europe, and the company expects a higher overseas share and stronger underwriting capability. On shareholder returns, it has targeted lifting the total payout ratio to 35% by 2028, but the 2025 ratio of about 25.7% leaves roughly a 9-point gap. At end-Q3 2025 its K-ICS ratio of 226.5% exceeded the medium-term target, giving room to use capital above 220% for shareholder returns. Still, auto insurance is expected to struggle to narrow losses amid worsening loss ratios and rate-cut pressure, so the pace of core-business profit recovery is decisive.
The shares currently trade below book value per share (BPS of about KRW 182,285), at a discount to net assets. The PBR reached 1.0x in 2017, fell to 0.4x in 2020, and recently recovered to around 0.7x, placing it in the upper-middle of its historical band. Return on equity is around 16.3%, above the typical global non-life target of 10-15%. On dividends, the FY2025 DPS was raised 11.8% to KRW 7,600 from KRW 6,800, and its dividend yield stands out as relatively high among insurance stocks. Versus Samsung Fire trading at about 1.1x PBR over the same period, DB has been valued relatively lower. That said, its payout ratio of 25.7% is below Samsung Fire (41.1%) and Meritz Financial (61.7%), and whether this gap narrows is cited as the key to re-rating.
The Fortegra deal marks a full entry into the U.S. and Europe, the world's largest non-life markets. The acquisition is positive for both top-line growth and portfolio diversification, and rapid overseas penetration is expected to strengthen underwriting capability. It complements slowing domestic growth with overseas revenue.
It is accelerating shareholder returns by combining higher dividends with share cancellations. After cancelling 1.416 million shares in late 2025, in February 2026 DB approved cancelling about 5.6% of shares (around KRW 800 billion). With an activist-recommended outside director from Align Partners joining the board, demands for higher payouts have become a formal agenda item, raising prospects of further policy change.
It remains near the top in both profit and capital. 2025 pre-tax profit of KRW 2.108 trillion was third in the industry, equity of KRW 9.855 trillion second, and CSM balance of KRW 12.205 trillion second. A K-ICS ratio of 226.5% exceeds the medium-term target, leaving ample room for further returns and investment.
Rising risk loss ratios and a worse expected-vs-actual claims gap are shaking core profitability. Although usually stable, Q1 2026 saw an unexpectedly sharp slump. With the claims gap persisting, long-term insurance profit is also expected to decline year over year, leaving the recovery timing uncertain.
Auto insurance faces pressure on both loss ratios and rates. With worsening loss ratios and rate-cut pressure persisting, it is expected to struggle to narrow losses. Some see medium-term improvement visibility if system reforms proceed in parallel.
A payout ratio below peers is cited as a discount factor. Its 25.7% payout ratio trails Samsung Fire (41.1%) and Meritz Financial (61.7%), and also lags the medium-term target of 35%. Align Partners demands raising the payout to 50% and improving related-party issues such as trademark co-ownership with DB Inc., keeping governance concerns in focus.
DB Insurance is a large non-life insurer with a long-term-insurance-led portfolio and top-tier capital and earnings power. In 2025 its top line grew but profit paused on large general-insurance claims and rising risk loss ratios, and Q1 2026 net profit fell sharply on a worse claims gap. At the same time, it is diversifying revenue via the U.S. Fortegra acquisition and accelerating shareholder returns through higher dividends and share cancellations. Notably, activist fund Align Partners' board entry has intensified pressure over capital policy and governance. The shares trade at a discount to book with relatively high dividend appeal, while the pace of auto and long-term loss-ratio recovery and the success of overseas M&A integration will shape future earnings.
