English version
An HBM and server-DRAM boom drove the company past 50 trillion won in quarterly revenue for the first time, yet HBM4 qualification, intensifying competition and a heavy capex cycle remain key things to watch.
SK Hynix is a memory-chip specialist built on two pillars, DRAM and NAND flash, and holds the global lead in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI servers. According to Counterpoint Research, SK Hynix ranked first with a 62% HBM shipment share as of Q2 2025 and held a 57% share by Q3 revenue, maintaining an oligopolistic position. It has been the priority HBM supplier for key customer NVIDIA's flagship GPUs, and NVIDIA has preferentially adopted SK Hynix HBM in main GPUs such as the H100, H200 and Blackwell, with roughly 70% of NVIDIA's HBM4-generation volume reported to go to SK Hynix. Beyond HBM, its portfolio spans high-capacity server DRAM modules, enterprise SSDs, and graphics and low-power memory. The company said it sustained earnings momentum by expanding sales of high-value products such as HBM, high-capacity server DRAM modules and eSSDs. In NAND, its subsidiary Solidigm strengthens its reach into AI storage markets. SK Hynix plans to strengthen its competitiveness in AI data center and AI PC storage markets based on synergy with Solidigm, which has strengths in high-capacity QLC eSSDs. The competitive landscape is a three-way race with Samsung Electronics and Micron, with Samsung pursuing a foundry-plus-memory turnkey strategy in the HBM4 generation. The company is also building custom-HBM competitiveness through advanced-packaging cooperation with TSMC, combining base-die fine processes with CoWoS.
Earnings have swung dramatically with the cycle. In 2023 the company posted revenue of 32.8 trillion won, an operating loss of 7.7 trillion won and a net loss of 9.1 trillion won; in 2024 it returned to profit with revenue of 66.2 trillion won and operating profit of 23.5 trillion won. In 2025 both the top line and profit expanded sharply to revenue of 97.1 trillion won, operating profit of 47.2 trillion won and owners' net income of 42.9 trillion won, with the operating margin at 48.6%, ROE at 35.6% and the debt ratio improving to 45.9%. The quarterly trajectory was steep, with operating profit rising from 7.4 trillion won in Q1 2025 to 19.2 trillion won in Q4. The company set a record for quarterly operating profit for four consecutive quarters starting in Q2 2025. The peak came in Q1 2026, as SK Hynix posted consolidated revenue of 52.58 trillion won and operating profit of 37.61 trillion won, with revenue up 198.1% year on year and 60.2% quarter on quarter, operating profit up 96.2% quarter on quarter, and an operating margin of 72%. Owners' net income reached 40.3 trillion won that quarter. Price increases were the key driver: DRAM shipments held at the prior quarter's level but average selling prices rose by the mid-60% range, while NAND shipments fell about 10% yet ASPs jumped by the mid-70% range, lifting both revenue and profitability. Its balance sheet also strengthened, as cash and cash equivalents at quarter-end rose 19.4 trillion won from the prior quarter to 54.3 trillion won, while borrowings fell 2.9 trillion won to 19.3 trillion won, achieving net cash of 35 trillion won. Still, it fell short of the 40 trillion won operating profit some brokerages had expected, attributed to HBM3E price cuts and an incentive provision.
The prevailing view is that the memory industry has entered a structural upcycle centered on AI infrastructure investment. The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization projects the 2026 global chip market to grow more than 25% year on year to about $975 billion, with the memory segment growing at a 30%-plus rate that outpaces the overall market. Supply-demand has tilted toward sellers, as Micron's steep price-hike demands are seen as evidence that the memory market has shifted into a full-blown sellers' market. Price strength continued into the second quarter, with commodity DRAM prices estimated to have risen more than 50% and NAND prices more than 70% versus the prior quarter. A side effect of surging prices is pressure on set markets, as IDC forecast global PC shipments to fall 11.3% in 2026 due to memory supply-demand imbalances. The industry's center of gravity is shifting from HBM3E to HBM4, though HBM3E is widely expected to remain the workhorse in 2026. The prevailing view is that HBM3E will be the main HBM product in 2026, with HBM4 gradually gaining share. Versus rivals, SK Hynix's incumbency in NVIDIA's supply chain is a strength, but Samsung's diversification moves in HBM4, including AMD orders, are emerging as a variable.

The company is aggressively expanding capacity on the premise of a memory shortage. On capex, it said this year's spending will increase significantly from the prior year, mostly for the M15X ramp-up, infrastructure preparation centered on the Yongin cluster, and securing key equipment. In Cheongju, P&T7 will be built on a 70,000-pyeong site in the Cheongju Technopolis industrial complex at a total scale of 19 trillion won, breaking ground in April 2026 with completion targeted for end-2027. The Yongin cluster is also accelerating, as SK Hynix confirmed an additional 21.6 trillion won in new facility investment for the first Yongin fab in February. Its product roadmap is advancing too: in DRAM, the company completed the world's first 1c-nm LPDDR6 development in Q1 for full-scale supply in the second half, and began mass production of a 1c-nm 192GB SOCAMM2 optimized for NVIDIA's Vera Rubin platform. Qualification of top-tier HBM4 is a key hurdle, as SK Hynix has begun redesigning its 11.7Gbps-class HBM4, with the supply decision expected around year-end. Shareholder returns are also expanding, as the company demonstrated its commitment last year with 2.1 trillion won in total dividends and 12.2 trillion won in share cancellations. Still, the company itself said it judges that reinvesting generated cash into the business is currently the best use of capital, so the balance between investment and shareholder returns is a point to watch.
As the cycle swung from loss to strong profit, earnings-based metrics recovered rapidly, with the on-screen card showing ROE of 61.2%, earnings per share of 107,463 won and book value per share of 232,911 won. With the share price having climbed steeply toward record highs, however, the stock trades at a considerable premium to net assets. Some brokerages, reflecting the earnings surge, see profit-based valuation as low relative to the usual trading band for memory companies, but this reading depends heavily on future earnings estimates. On dividends, an additional dividend of 1,500 won per share and cancellation of 15 million treasury shares were resolved, yet because the company has prioritized reinvesting cash, the dividend yield itself is relatively modest given its growth-stock nature. Ultimately, the justification for current levels hinges on the durability of the memory boom and the company's ability to sustain HBM4 competitiveness, making assumptions about the cycle's direction the central variable.
SK Hynix leads in HBM by both shipments and revenue and has secured a foothold in NVIDIA's supply chain. The widening of demand across DRAM and NAND from spreading AI inference is also favorable. The company said that as AI evolves into an agentic phase of repeated real-time inference across diverse service environments, the memory demand base is broadening across DRAM and NAND.
With suppliers unable to ramp volume quickly, some see the price upcycle lasting longer than past cycles. Major customers' memory demand is rising across HBM, server DRAM and eSSDs, while suppliers cannot expand supply quickly, and as this shortage persists the price upcycle is likely to last longer than in the past. Chairman Chey forecast the memory bottleneck to continue through 2030.
The Q1 operating margin of 72% is a company record and ranks among the highest of global chipmakers. One estimate put the Q1 operating margin near 77%, exceeding NVIDIA's prior-quarter margin of about 65%. Its balance sheet has also improved markedly, including a shift to net cash.
Delays in securing top-tier HBM4 yields could weigh on medium-term competitiveness. The industry has raised concerns that next-generation HBM4 may not have secured sufficient yields at NVIDIA's required 11.7Gbps bandwidth. With Samsung's mass production confirmed, some volume shift has also been observed. After Samsung confirmed HBM4 shipments, SK Hynix's NVIDIA volumes reportedly fell considerably, with Samsung supplying some of the volume instead.
DRAM and NAND are classic cyclical industries where prices fall as supply expands. If expanded U.S. chip investment and the potential entry of Chinese players coincide, this could lead to easing supply-demand and downward price pressure. As the large 2023 loss showed, the amplitude of downturns is significant. Some research houses also flag a possible HBM price correction amid intensifying competition.
Simultaneous investments in Yongin, Cheongju and Indiana are sharply raising the capex burden. SK Hynix is expected to spend more than 38 trillion won this year, a roughly 52% surge from the prior year. Chairman Chey said more than 600 trillion won will be invested in the Yongin cluster alone, with each Yongin fab estimated to cost about 120 trillion won. If conditions turn, fixed-cost burdens could quickly erode profitability.
SK Hynix is among the biggest beneficiaries of the AI memory supercycle, posting record results in Q1 2026 as quarterly revenue topped 50 trillion won for the first time. Its HBM oligopoly, foothold in NVIDIA's supply chain and an operating margin above 70% are powerful strengths. At the same time, on the premise of a prolonged memory shortage, the company is pursuing large-scale expansion in Yongin, Cheongju and the U.S. to build future capacity. Yet top-tier HBM4 qualification, Samsung's catch-up, the possibility of a cyclical downturn and a massive capex burden are bearish factors to weigh evenly. The 2023 loss showed that downturns can be deep. In the short term, Q2 results and price trends are key; over the medium term, HBM4 qualification outcomes and expansion progress are the variables to confirm.
