English version
With domestic alcohol consumption in structural decline, Hite Jinro has defended margins through soju market share and cost efficiency, but shrinking beer volumes and the year-end Vietnam plant start-up are the two swing factors for future earnings.
Hite Jinro is a diversified alcoholic beverage maker built on soju and beer, with bottled water and other liquors alongside. For the first nine months of 2025, soju accounted for 60% of consolidated revenue (KRW 1,152.9bn), beer 31% (KRW 608.3bn), and bottled water and other segments only single digits. Soju runs on a dual-brand structure of Chamisul and Jinro, and Jinro surpassed cumulative sales of 2.2bn bottles as of the first quarter of 2026. The beer portfolio spans the regular lines Terra and Kelly, the price-competitive happoshu brand Filite, and the recently broadened non-alcoholic Terra Zero range. On competition, Hite Jinro led the soju market with a 66.2% volume share in 2025 versus 17.6% for Lotte Chilsung Beverage, with the two together at 83.8%. In beer, by contrast, OB Beer has held the top share since 2012 on the strength of Cass. Sales channels split between off-premise outlets such as hypermarkets and convenience stores and on-premise restaurants and bars, with beer volumes especially sensitive to on-premise recovery. Overseas operations rest on an export network covering some 82 countries and local subsidiaries in seven markets: China, Russia, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam and the United States. On leadership, in December 2025 former CEO Kim In-kyu stepped down to an advisory role and Jang In-seop, a career management-side executive, took over in the first CEO change in 15 years.
On confirmed numbers, the top line has been stuck around KRW 2.5tn for four years: KRW 2,497.6bn in 2022, KRW 2,520.2bn in 2023, KRW 2,599.2bn in 2024, then back down to KRW 2,498.6bn in 2025. Profit swings are far wider than sales swings. Operating profit fell from KRW 190.6bn (7.6% margin) in 2022 to KRW 123.9bn (4.9%) in 2023, recovered to KRW 208.1bn (8.0%) in 2024, and narrowed again to KRW 172.3bn (6.9%) in 2025. Net profit attributable to owners more than halved, from KRW 95.9bn in 2024 to KRW 41.5bn in 2025, largely because the fourth quarter of 2025 alone carried revenue of KRW 569.7bn, an operating loss of KRW 9.2bn and an owners' net loss of KRW 63.6bn. Media coverage attributed that quarter's 9.1% revenue decline to KRW 569.7bn and swing to a KRW 9.2bn operating loss to one-off labor-cost increases coinciding with the liquor market slump (Korea Stock News, March 2026). The net loss being far larger than the operating loss points to non-operating items, and that quarter still distorts profit metrics measured over the most recent four quarters. The margin trend changed in 2026: first-quarter revenue of KRW 590.8bn with operating profit of KRW 55.9bn (9.5% margin) and second-quarter revenue of KRW 618.6bn with operating profit of KRW 64.9bn (10.5%), meaning margins improved even as revenue came in below the KRW 646.6bn of the second quarter of 2025. The company said sales fell on slowing alcohol consumption but profitability held up thanks to cost efficiency including lower selling and administrative expenses, with soju operating profit rising from KRW 49.1bn to KRW 58.2bn while beer operating profit fell from KRW 11.7bn to KRW 8.3bn. Cash generation strengthened, with operating cash flow moving from negative KRW 74.0bn in 2022 to KRW 164.4bn in 2023, KRW 294.6bn in 2024 and KRW 232.6bn in 2025, while the debt-to-equity ratio eased from 201.0% in 2023 to 186.5% in 2025.
Korea's liquor market has moved beyond cyclical softness into structural contraction. National Tax Service statistics show 2025 domestic liquor shipments of 2.988m kiloliters, the first reading below 3m kiloliters since the 1998 financial crisis, 27 years earlier. Tastes are shifting fast: Lotte Chilsung Beverage cut Saero to 15.7% ABV and Hite Jinro adjusted Jinro to the same level, while OB Beer is entering with a lower 15% product. Soju has kept a stable two-player structure, but OB Beer's launch of the zero-sugar soju Chalrang in late September is expected to intensify competition. Beer weakness shows up in operating data: Hite Jinro's beer output fell from 124,959 kl in the first quarter of 2024 to 117,125 kl in the first quarter of 2025 and 100,903 kl in the first quarter of 2026, with utilization sliding from 73.1% to 67.8% and then 58.6%. Meritz Securities analyst Kim Jung-wook said in an August 2026 report that with the domestic beer market flat in size, rising competitor volumes pulled both Hite Jinro's volumes and share lower. Overseas, the picture is one of growth. Hite Jinro's soju exports grew at a 26% annual average over the past five years, and exports of other liqueurs including fruit-flavored soju reached USD 100.41m in 2025, up 4.3% and above USD 100m for the first time. The domestic market is thus about defending volume declines with pricing and cost control, while overseas is where volume growth is sought.

The most verifiable upcoming event is the first overseas production base. The company said in August 2026 that it is building its first overseas plant in the Green i-Park industrial complex in Vietnam, targeting completion by the end of 2026. At groundbreaking, the company described an 82,083 square meter smart-factory site with maximum annual capacity of about 5m cases. Investment was reported at around USD 100m. Shinhan Investment estimated that the plant's 5m-case capacity would cover roughly 30% of an expected 17m cases of sales in 2030. Domestically, product diversification is the near-term variable. A company official said in August 2026 that while beer profit fell on weak consumption, diversification including Terra Zero would drive third-quarter improvement. Broker views differ. NH Investment & Securities analyst Joo Young-hoon said in a June 2026 report that although declining domestic alcohol consumption is slowing the market recovery, cost reductions make a 2026 rebound in annual operating profit highly visible and the year-end Vietnam completion could be reflected later in the year, presenting a lowered target price of KRW 23,000. KB Securities said in an April 2026 report that it maintained a Buy rating and a KRW 25,000 target price, expecting margin improvement from production efficiency and reduced marketing spend to become visible into the second half. On management direction, Chairman Park Moon-duk's new year message emphasized removing inefficiency and redesigning the profit structure, prompting analysis that restructuring of low-return businesses, facilities and headcount may be considered.
The first thing to account for in valuation is a distorted profit base. Earnings over the most recent four quarters include the fourth quarter of 2025 with its operating loss and large net loss, so a price-to-earnings figure computed on that period's net profit reads higher than the earning power implied by the 9-10% quarterly operating margins seen in the first half of 2026. Conversely, asset-based measures have traded in territory below book value per share, a different position from food-and-beverage names that carry a premium to assets on growth expectations. Dividends have been maintained in absolute terms. The total payout for fiscal 2025 was set at roughly KRW 48.9bn and the company's corporate value enhancement plan disclosure recorded a 2025 payout ratio of 117.9%. A payout ratio above 100% means debate over dividend funding can persist unless profits recover; conversely, if earnings normalize, the same absolute payout becomes less burdensome. Ultimately the multiple on this stock is a number that will be recalculated against two verifiable facts: whether beer escapes its near-breakeven zone, and how much overseas volume follows the Vietnam start-up.
Hite Jinro held a dominant 66.2% soju share on 2025 volumes. In the second quarter of 2026, soju revenue rose just 0.1% but segment operating profit climbed 18.4% from KRW 49.1bn to KRW 58.2bn. Growing segment profit while market volumes shrink is tangible evidence of brand pricing power. Confirmed results show company-wide margins of 9.5% in the first quarter of 2026 and 10.5% in the second.
Soju exports grew at a 26% annual average over five years, and exports of other liqueurs including fruit soju topped USD 100m for the first time in 2025. The company said the Vietnam plant is under construction with completion targeted for the end of 2026. Shinhan Investment projected the plant's maximum capacity would cover about 30% of expected 2030 sales volume. Local production can create a different cost structure from exporting, in logistics, tariffs and flexibility on container formats.
On confirmed figures, operating cash flow moved from negative KRW 74.0bn in 2022 to KRW 164.4bn in 2023, KRW 294.6bn in 2024 and KRW 232.6bn in 2025, while the debt-to-equity ratio fell from 201.0% in 2023 to 186.5% in 2025. The company said profitability held in the second quarter of 2026 thanks to cost efficiency including lower selling and administrative expenses. With Chairman Park Moon-duk calling for removing inefficiency and redesigning the profit structure, the management-focused stance of the new leadership and its effect on fixed costs bear watching.
Second-quarter 2026 beer revenue fell 15.3% from KRW 208.1bn to KRW 176.3bn, and its operating profit dropped 29.2% from KRW 11.7bn to KRW 8.3bn. Beer output declined from 124,959 kl in the first quarter of 2024 to 100,903 kl in the first quarter of 2026, with utilization down from 73.1% to 58.6%. First-quarter 2026 beer operating profit was just KRW 1.7bn, a margin of about 1.06%. Falling utilization works to increase the fixed-cost burden.
OB Beer launches Chalrang, a 15% ABV zero-sugar soju, in late September, differentiated with Jeju volcanic bedrock water and lava seawater salt. Its ability to leverage Cass's restaurant and bar accounts is seen as lowering initial entry hurdles. Because soju is the core of Hite Jinro's profit, higher promotional spending to defend on-premise share could hit margins directly. Whether intensified competition shows up in share and promotion costs is a key item to verify in coming quarters.
Domestic liquor shipments totaled 2.988m kiloliters in 2025, below 3m for the first time in 27 years. The 20% draft-beer liquor tax reduction granted to small business owners during the COVID-19 period expires from 2027, which is cited as an added burden. Combined with assessments that the lager-centric beer market has passed maturity, price increases alone may not offset volume declines. Quarters combining weak volumes with one-off costs, as in the fourth quarter of 2025, cannot be ruled out.
Hite Jinro's current setup can be summarized as soju holding the line while beer drags. On confirmed figures, 2025 revenue was KRW 2,498.6bn with operating profit of KRW 172.3bn (6.9% margin), down from KRW 2,599.2bn, KRW 208.1bn and 8.0% in 2024, and the fourth quarter combined a KRW 9.2bn operating loss with a KRW 63.6bn owners' net loss. Yet in the first quarter of 2026 (revenue KRW 590.8bn, operating profit KRW 55.9bn) and the second (KRW 618.6bn and KRW 64.9bn), operating margins rose into the 9-10% range even as revenue declined, showing the cost restructuring in the numbers. By segment, second-quarter 2026 soju operating profit rose 18.4% while beer fell 29.2%, widening the gap. Future earnings will likely hinge on how quickly the Vietnam plant targeted for completion at the end of 2026 translates into overseas volume, on share and promotional spending trends after OB Beer's late-September entry into soju, and on whether beer utilization recovers. The premise of a structurally shrinking market, with domestic liquor shipments below 3m kiloliters for the first time in 27 years, applies equally to the bullish and bearish cases.
